The Vampire Diaries TV Show

On September 10, 2009, the land of hot vampire stars was shocked with a brand new TV show: The Vampire Diaries. Based off of the LJ Smith novels by the same name, the TV show follows Nina Dobrev as Elena Gilbert, Paul Wesley as Stefan Salvatore, and Ian Somerhalder as Damon Salvatore.

There are several differences between the TV show and the novels. For example, Elena has a brother in the show instead of a sister. Meredith is a central character and best friend of Elena in the books, but she is nonexistent in the show. Bonnie was a redheaded Celtic descendant of Witches, instead of a African-American Salem Witch ancestor like in the show.

Who knows where this show will end up. All we do know is that the network extended the 13 episode Season 1 into a 22 episode season. This meant that The Vampire Diaries did not air a brand new episode for 8 weeks, but will return on January 14, 2010.

The Vampire Diaries Books

In 1991, author Lisa Jane (L.J.) Smith published her quartet, The Vampire Diaries. It follows the life of teenager Elena Gilbert, an ice-hearted popularity queen. When a new boy in town shows up at school, she is instantly smitten--but there are untold secrets about Stefan Salvatore that will change her world forever. For starters, he's a vampire...

Then a new player shows up in town, just as handsome as Stefan but twice the bad boy. It's Stefan's brother, Damon, a cold-blooded killer. But when the Salvatore brothers see Elena, they are obsessed - after all, she looks just like their maker, Katherine. And Katherine wrapped the boys around her little fingers until they turned against each other and she supposedly died.

The Vampire Diaries became a TV Show on the CW network in 2009. It features Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley, and Ian Somerhalder as the love triangle stars.

Originally, the series was a trilogy, but when the third book left the narrator dead, LJ Smith was asked to pen a fourth book. Then, when the vampire scene sublimated the teenage market with Twilight, the publishers requested an installment of three more The Vampire Diaries novels. These are called The Vampire Diaries: The Return and follow Damon and Elena after she returned from the dead. There will be a total of 7 in the Vampire Diaries series.
